George Bailey has made way for captain Michael Clarke in Australia's XI to play New Zealand in Saturday's cricket World Cup match in Auckland.

Clarke will be making his first appearance at the World Cup in the much-anticipated clash at Eden Park, with Bailey named as 12th man.

Selectors have also made a change to the bowling attack, with Pat Cummins replacing Josh Hazlewood.

Clarke returns to lead Australia in a competitive match for the first time since tearing his hamstring over two months ago, while Hazlewood was set to be dropped for the washed-out clash with Bangladesh in Brisbane.

The Australia skipper had played in the final World Cup warm-up match against United Arab Emirates, but was kept on ice for the tournament opener against England at the MCG.

"Everyone is sick of talking and reading about my injury, my old injury I should say," Clarke said.

"The body feels really good, I have worked really hard.

"The work I've put in has given me a chance to get back out on to the park and be able to play at 100 per cent."

Clarke notes that "doesn't guarantee I'm not going to get injured again".

"I know I can walk out on to the field tomorrow and go at 100 miles an hour and if I get injured I get injured," he said.

"I'm like every other player. I feel like I'm as fit and healthy as I've been in at least five years.

"I'm ready to go."

Clarke played a flat bat to Steve Waugh's suggestion that Shane Warne's recent comments regarding coach Darren Lehmann would have an unsettling impact on the squad.

"At the moment the team is really focused on tomorrow's game, and we have been all week," Clarke said.

"Our preparation has been the most important thing and whether we get to train or not, we're ready to play."

Black Caps captain Brendon McCullum earlier quashed any fears over Tim Southee's selection to meet Australia, saying the in-form quick is expected to play in an unchanged XI.

Southee suffered a nasty blow when struck by a throw from team-mate Adam Milne during fielding practice on Thursday and fell to the ground in obvious pain, clutching the back of his right shoulder.
