The Election Department has urged urged voters to exercise their franchise as early as possible today and avoid disappointment.

Elections Chief Mahinda Deshapriya said yesterday that the country’s seventh Presidential Election would be conducted from 7.00am to 4.00pm today countrywide.
He said that no one was permitted to enter the polling stations other than registered voters, staff of the polling station, security officials, authorized election monitors and polling agents deployed by the candidates.
Deshapriya said that only the National Identity Card, valid Driving Licence, valid Passport, Pension ID, Elder’s ID or temporary identity cards issued by the Elections Department were valid to establish a voter’s identity. A receipt issued by the Department of Registration of Persons when applying for an NIC was not a valid document, he stressed.
He said 15,044,490 people were eligible to vote at today’s election and nearly 300,000 government servants would be on election duty.
There are 19 candidates in the fray, including incumbent President Mahinda Rajapaksa from the UPFA and former SLFP General Secretary, former Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena from the New Democratic Front.
There are 12,314 polling stations in the 22 administrative districts. Ballot boxes were sent to respective polling stations from main counting centres countrywide yesterday under heavy security.
Deshapriya said that there were 303 postal vote counting centres and 1,109 main counting centres set up in 44 places countrywide.
More than 70,000 policemen would be on duty for the Presidential Election, the Polls Chief said, adding that the army would be deployed if necessary and security had been tightened in several areas where violent incidents had been reported.
"The military will be called in to assist the Police if violence erupts, even after the election results are announced. We will be very strict and severe on culprits who engage in acts of violence or instigate violence; we won’t hesitate to annul the result of any polling station affected by violence and malpractices," Deshapriya said.
Local election monitors including the People’s Action for Free and Fair Election (PAFFREL), Campaign for Free and Fair Election (CaFEE) and Centre for Monitoring Election Violence (CMEV) and foreign observers, including Commonwealth Election Monitors will observe today’s election.
Deshapriya said the counting of vote would be started at 6.00pm today and they expected to release first postal voting result by midnight.
